Keynote Events from Google i/o 2023

Sydney's seminar

You may have seen in the news that Google’s annual keynote event, Google I/O 2023, took place on May 10th. Every year at this event, Google announces all their upcoming releases and new technology projects to the public. Keynotes like these are common among the top technology companies in the world and help encourage other companies to continue to innovate and work towards bigger and better technology. Follow along below for some of the cool new stuff you can look forward to in the near future!

Google Maps

Many of us are familiar with Google Maps; If you can believe it, Google Maps has over 150 million users monthly. Due to the high demand for this software app, Google works constantly to improve its features and reliability.

In this year’s I/O, Google unveiled a new feature that will be released soon called “Immersive View for Routes.” Though this will only be in select cities, the view will include more information, such as bike lanes, complex intersections, parking, and more.

Magic Editor and Magic Compose

Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the magic Adobe Photoshop skills we would like, but Google is coming out with a new feature you’ll love! The Magic Editor is an AI-powered software that can make major edits to your photos. This feature will include editing the foreground and background, filling in gaps in the photo, and repositioning the subject for a better frame.

A fun twist on the Magic Editor is a feature called Magic Compose, which can take the text you’ve written and rewrite your message in a preferred style. Those of us who work in offices are well aware of the struggle to sound as professional as possible in emails, and this software will quickly remedy those anxieties!

Bard

Right now, the tech world is in a race to develop the most sophisticated AI (to learn more about AI, check out my blog, What is AI?). With the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google has been finishing up their own AI chat tool called Bard. At the conference, Google announced that not only is this tool available, but they are already working to make it even smarter! The company has a goal of Bard supporting 40 new releases.

The coolest new feature of Bard is that it can now show you images in its responses to you. Soon, Bard will be able to generate images for users.

Increased Safety in Find My Device

The invention of tracking devices such as Apple’s AirTag has brought unintended consequences. Unfortunately, criminals are using these devices to stalk unknowing victims by planting them on the victim’s car or person. Google has teamed up with Apple to introduce new safety features that help prevent unknown trackers. Among these new features is My Device which notifies users if their phone detects an unknown tracker moving with them.

Project Tailwind

Taking notes is a hugely annoying but necessary part of adult life. Leave it to Google to find a way to revolutionize this mundane task. Project Tailwind is an AI-powered notebook that will take notes for you, automatically organizing and summarizing them.

Universal Translator

Currently, Google is testing a new feature of their translation services that was only recently made possible by the rapid evolution of AI in the past year. This feature, called Universal Translator, can change the language that you’re speaking in uploaded videos. For example, you could upload a video of a lecture, and this service will not only translate the speech to a different language but also overlay your voice speaking in that other language over the video. Using deep fake technology, it will even synchronize your lips to the language being spoken!

In most tech keynotes, companies announce their newest devices and updates that will be released soon. Below are the four devices that were announced at Google I/O 2023:

  • Pixel 7a
    • Now on sale, the Pixel 7a is a lower-cost option for high-end smartphones. It comes with a smaller 6.1-inch screen option, and the camera has a higher pixel density than previous generations.
